Rising star Juan Martin del Potro to compete for Argentina

Duesseldorf (pps) Tennis enthusiasts may be looking forward to the 32nd edition of the ARAG WORLD TEAM CUP to take place on May 17-23, 2009: the shooting star on the tennis circuit, Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro, will compete at Duesseldorf Rochusclub. The 20-year-old rising star is currently seventh on the ATP rankings and right now the youngest Top Ten player. The 1.98m tall right-handed player has always been the youngest around: 2007 among the Top 50, 2006 among the Top 100 and in 2005 among the Top 200.

Del Potro burst onto the international stage in July and August 2008, when he won four straight ATP tournaments (Stuttgart, Kitzbuehel, Los Angeles and Washington). At the US Open he then made it into his first Grand Slam quarterfinals (defeat by Roger Federer) and clinched his spot at the prestigious Tennis Masters Cup. With Argentina's Davis Cup team he reached the final versus Spain. In 2009 del Potro has so far played three tournaments. The result: victory in Auckland, quarterfinals at the Australian Open and at San José.

Argentina's tennis players are renowned for their skills on clay. This holds true for del Potro as well. Because with a 15-3 record and two tournament titles he was one of the most successful clay court players. However, according to del Potro 'hard courts' are his favourite surfaces. And this judgement seems to be justified - he earned three of his so far five titles on this surface.

Tournament Director Dietloff von Arnim is thrilled: 'With Juan Martin del Potro we'll be welcoming a player who has the capacity to further climb up the ATP ranking.' So far, del Potro has not yet played at the ARAG WORLD TEAM CUP. His team-mates have yet to be determined.
