Juan Martin del Potro makes his singles debut

The highest-ranked player competing at the 2009 ARAG WORLD TEAM CUP, will make his debut in the singles on Tuesday: Argentine Juan Martin del Potro (ATP 5) will meet Italian Andreas Seppi (ATP 54) in the second singles on Center Court I. Del Potro made it into the world’s tennis top within a year. He won his first ATP Tour title, the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, last year and wasn’t to be stopped after that. The 20-year-old, born at Tandil, won the tournament in Auckland this year and most recently played the semi-final in Madrid last week. He also was a quarter-finalist at the Australian Open.

At his first appearance on the Rochusclub site, del Potro suffered a defeat, however. Together with his buddy Juan Monaco he lost the decisive doubles to Serbians Nenad Zimonjic and Viktor Troicki in the match tie-break on Monday. This didn’t alter del Potro’s goal for the ARAG World Team Championship: “We want to achieve the title in Duesseldorf.” Düsseldorf (pps)
